Evaluation of "Let's Talk" - Preliminary Task

"Let's Talk" Evaluation

After the process of planning, filming and editing it has been good to practice filming this documentary for our further final documentary we shall make. It has also been helpful to work in groups, to give an eye opener as to what the rest of the year will be like.
Me and my partner Helen, planned the mise-en-scene and cutaways, but then due to technical difficulties, things evidently did not go to plan. This also shows that for the final task we shall be much more prepared and make sure our filming skills are on top form.
The music he choose, was a last minute occurrence as this was rushed and not a lot of thinking went into it, therefore the outcome was that the song choice of "Heard it through the grapevine -Marvin Gaye" which is apparent has no relevance to the topic of "mobile phones". Additionally to the fact the song choice was irrelevant, also as we edited the music to become quiet as the documentary could allow to play over, the volume was not turned down enough making it difficult to hear the dialogue, and also becomes distracting, also there is no fade at the end of the video as it creates a jumpy frame and doesn't seem as if the video is over. This is something we shall remember for our final documentary.
During the filming, we did not follow the codes and conventions directly, as the archive footage we filmed was hand held, as this becomes shaky and looks very unprofessional and careless. Linking in to camera work, it is apparent that the positioning of the interviewee was very off, as the rule of thirds was not intact, this goes against the codes and conventions. During filming, it is also apparent, that the mise-en-scene of the interview is misleading, as signs in the back such as "Sentence" and "12.Lit" distracts the audience as it clearly has nothing to do with the documentary.
Over all, the experience of the preliminary task was very helpful as it shows what mistakes we carelessly made, and have now picked up on for future references,

Editing of "Let's Talk"

As we edited out our questions from the interview, we added in music to make it more watchable. However, the music, “Heard it from the grapevine” held no connection to the topic, so this made it distracting to watch. We also edited in the cutaways we filmed of our fellow friends on their mobile phones etc. This was a good idea as it can hide away the jump cuts, but unfortunately, our cutaways were filmed hand held which in the documentary looks very unprofessional and shaky, and also goes against the codes and conventions. After we added in the song, we lowered the volume down, to about -22, so the video of the documentary could run as the dialogue was being spoken above the volume. As it was a backing track. The main feature of the editing was the fact we cut out the questions asked, as it was just the interviewee answering the questions in the documentary.

Filming "Let's Talk"

The filming process didn't go exactly to plan due to us being dis-organized, taking note of this is will make us more aware that we have to be very organized for our future documentaries. As we didn't have a specific place to film as this made it hard to create the mise-en-scene we had intended to use. We did on the other hand, complete every question with goo audio and clear filming.

Planning "Let's Talk"

First in our planning we decided on what cutaways we would film, we liked the idea of filming our friends on their mobile phones and showing through the documentary how dependent people are on mobile phones, and also as it links to one of the questions. Also linking to one of our questions, we filmed various archive footage of blackberry mobile phones as the person we interviewed told us her current phone is a blackberry. We also discussed what the mise-en-scene could be, we liked the idea of a desk, with a computer behind showing a website of a mobile phone website, and also having mobile phones apparent in the shot. Additionally, we wrote a script to answer the questions provided as we wanted clear answers that the audience would understand, as in editing we would be taking out the questions asked by me and Helen.
